Bone Broth: Not Just Broth, It’s Concentrated Healing

The consumption of bone broth is certainly trending. Yet, although it appears to be one of the latest fads, bone broth has actually been around for thousands of years. This culinary staple has traditionally been used as a base to soups or pan sauces, but can even be consumed on its own due to its unique healing components. At Nourished®, we feel that for most people, the inclusion of a good quality bone broth is the single most valuable aspect that you can add to your diet.

  • Bone broth, otherwise known as stock, is made by a low, slow simmer of the bones of either chicken, beef or fish. After 24-36 hours of cooking, bones and aromatics are strained, and the remaining broth is used for cooking, flavoring and/or concentrated healing.
  • Bone broth is rich in collagen, gelatin, amino acids (protein) and minerals.
  • With benefits that include fighting fine lines and wrinkles, boosting immunity, healing the gut and preventing cancer, we often refer to bone broth as “liquid gold.”
  • At Nourished®, we offer 100% Pastured Chicken Bone Broth – so tasty you can sip it like a cup of tea. Our small-batch broth is available for purchase by the quart, or garlic- and ginger-infused pints, and featured in many of our Cleanse and Family-Friendly Soups. Bone broth, otherwise known as stock, is made by a low, slow simmer of the bones of either chicken, beef or fish. After combining with aromatics such as celery, onion, garlic, carrots and bay leaf, and cooking for an upwards of 36 hours, the solids are strained and the remaining broth is utilized. This broth, infused with all of the collagen, gelatin, minerals and amino acids (protein) from the bones and vegetables, is what we often refer to as “liquid gold.”

But buyer beware: just like everything, quality counts! At Nourished®, our 100% Pastured Chicken Bone Broth is slow simmered in small batches using only pasture-raised chicken bones, filtered water and organic aromatics. So tasty that you can sip it like a cup of tea, our bone broth is also packed with gut-healing, immune-boosting, thyroid-supportive and anti-aging nutrients that simply aren’t present in others on the market.

And the benefits go on! Bone broth is a source of minerals, like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, in forms that your body can easily absorb. It’s rich in glycine and proline, amino acids not found in significant amounts in the animal proteins we typically consume. It also contains glucosamine, known for its ability to reduce inflammation, arthritis and joint pain.

In addition, cartilage-rich bones used to make broth contain a significant source of collagen. As the broth simmers, the breakdown of collagen is what produces gelatin, giving us healthy hair, skin and nails. Bone broth is also one of the best electrolyte tonics available. Great for fighting cravings; re-hydrating after a tough workout; and rebuilding joints, tendons and bones; bone broth helps stabilize the mood and even encourages relaxation. Its calming minerals are very nourishing for the adrenal glands, and thus helpful in lowering stress, anxiety and tension.

With a high concentration of gelatin, bone broth is one of the top gut-healing foods. The gut, which is essentially a narrow tube that starts at the esophagus, continues into the stomach, winds through the intestines and ends at the rectum, includes many of the digestive organs. The gut’s primary function is breaking down food and absorbing nutrients. Therefore, when you heal the gut, you improve nutrient absorption. Fueling every one of your 50-100 trillion cells, these nutrients increase energy, the metabolism and brain power.

So how does bone broth heal the gut? After consuming broth, gelatin combines with digestive liquids and forms a Jell-O®-like consistency. This plugs up holes in the digestive tract lining – commonly referred to as leaky gut– that may result from chronic inflammation; antibiotic, NSAID or other prescription drug use; infections; and bad gut bacteria overgrowth. This digestive condition is linked to autoimmunity, systemic inflammation, allergies and multiple food sensitivities. Furthermore, 70-80% of your immune system is located within the gut. Regularly drinking bone broth is great for preventing colds and flu, fighting cancer and more. There are many ways to incorporate bone broth into your diet. When preparing beans, grains, soups and stews, swap out water or vegetable broth for bone broth. This will not only impart more flavor, but it will significantly elevate the nutrition profile of your finished product. Sipping on 1-2 cups per day, as we often do here at Nourished®, is great for prevention and total body balance. When you’re sick, struggling with digestive distress or looking for deep detoxification, consider a full day or two of bone broth cleansing.

From fighting fine lines and wrinkles to boosting the immune system, detoxifying the body and preventing cancer, bone broth is a one-stop-shop for wellness. Whether you drink a cup a day for maintenance or do a complete day of cleansing, incorporating this superfood into your daily diet will nourish, energize and restore. Our 100% Pastured Chicken Bone Broth is available for purchase in unseasoned quarts, or garlic- and ginger-infused pints. It’s also featured in many of our Cleanse and Family-Friendly Soups.
